Burn rules

The Burn Rule module helps you convert loyalty points to monetary discounts at checkout. If the module is enabled, the Customers API will provide you with all the necessary information that you need to calculate the discount that customers can apply for in exchange for their points.

Setting up burn rules

You can find the configuration page of the Burn Rules module by clicking on the Modules icon in the sidebar and scrolling down to the ‘Core’ module category.

If your brand uses Points economy, the Burn Rules configuration is integrated into Points economy and you’ll be redirected automatically to the Burn rules tab of the Points economy module to configure the module.

If your brand uses Multi-accounts, the Burn Rules configuration is integrated into the account edior(s), therefore you’ll be redirected to the homepage of the Multi-accounts module where you will see the list of accounts that you have already set up. Click the ‘Edit’ button on the right end of the row to set up the specifics of the chosen account. Here, you can configure the Burn Rules settings under the Burn rules tab for each of the accounts added.

Exchange rates

  • Click the ‘Define new exchange rate’ button

  • Points
Enter the points that should be burnt for the amount of discount added in the ‘Amount’ field in the next step.

  • Amount
Enter the amount of money (discount) to get by burning the previously defined number of points.

  • Currency
Add the currencies that the calculation will be applied to using ISO 4217 currency codes (eg. EUR, JPY, GBP).

Please make sure you add an exchange rate for all the currencies that are supported when making payments.

Example scenario

Based on the above settings, a customer who has 426 spendable points can burn them in each currency as follows:

  • EUR – 425 spendable points can be converted to EUR 86 discount (1 EUR discount costs 5 points ) + 1 point left in the account

  • JPY – 420 spendable points can be converted to JPY 12 000 discount (200 JPY discount costs 7 points) + 6 points left in the account

  • GBP – 426 spendable points can be converted to GBP 71 discount (1 GBP discount costs 6 points) + 0 points left in the account

Special burn rules

Adding exceptions makes it possible to define a new set of Burn rules for specific customer groups, also known as, segments. Click the ‘Add new special burn rule’ button, select the segment(s), and add the exchange rates.

There could be a scenario when some segments might overlap among the rules that you want to apply. This can be further sophisticated using the ‘Priority’ field, specifying how high the given exception should be ranked (settings with ‘1' priority will override settings with '2’ priority).

Example scenario

  • Special burn rule #1 with Priority 2 – ‘Outgoers - EUR’ segment needs to spend 4 points to get EUR 1 discount

  • Special burn rule #2 with Priority 1 – ‘Gold - EUR’ members need to spend 3 points to get EUR 1 discount

→ Gold members who are Outgoers will need to spend 3 points to get EUR 1 discount as Special burn rule #2 takes priority.

At the bottom of the page, there are two buttons, ‘Cancel’ and ‘Update’.

If none of the Burn Rules point logic specifications entered are to be kept, click ‘Cancel’, this discards all unsaved data.

Click ‘Update’ to save all changes applied.
